So far Finland has never really been famous for its progressive metal acts in particular. Sure, there are a few mentionable bands but still most 'big' names of this genre come from the US. Therefore, it's not surprisingly that Adamantra draw some of their influences from bands such as Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery or Symphony X. Especially influences of the latter one shine clearly through. For instance, Adamantra make use of choirs in a similar way but never as distinctively that one could speak of copying Symphony X. Frankly, there is no need for copying or even hiding behind these 'big' names if one has skillful members in the band that play (or have played) in bands as Bride Adorned, TOC, Craydawn, Divercia, Mind-A-Stray, Olympos Mons or Grudge's Claw. They got all qualities to become one of the big prog-power metal bands themselves. The power metal part might not be too evident in the first song of this single, the titletrack "For Ever", which still reminds most of Symphony X, but as we pass on to "Ungiven" one can clearly hear other influences. Here we have more power and speed and this reminds a bit of Rhapsody (of Fire ;)). Adamantra managed to make their music sound progressive, which means complex, and yet catchy at the same time. We have a nice variety of melodic and powerful song structures, heavier and softer parts and somehow everything forms a unity.
Hard to imagine that we are only talking about a 3-track single (plus one radio edit), but listen yourself. Sometimes it's not worth buying singles but in this case there's no way around it, especially if you're interested in progressive metal. However, I really can recommend this band, check it out and be surprised!
