Finland can be called the country of melancholy and darkness. Saattue, a doom metal band from Riihimäki, has captured this atmosphere perfectly with their debut release Jäähyvästi. The band itself describes its music as “Gloomy Finnish saatto metal”. Saatto means `procession´, and the sepulchral imagery prevalent in the lyrics leaves little doubt as to what kind of procession is referred to. The band was formed in 2001 and released a bunch of demos until they got signed by the Spikefarm, a subsidiary of the renowned Spinefarm label, which offered them the possibility to get better known outside of Finland as well.

The melodies and the vocals are carried by an atmosphere of resignation and pain yet strong and touching, telling a story of loss and letting go. All songs are sung in Finnish, which perfectly matches the rhythm of the songs. The music itself is powerful and forging ahead, but always emotional and sensitive. The vocals change between clear and grunting parts as well as between male and female vocals. Vocalist T. Koskinen is supported by Ines Lukkanen (Embassy Of Silence) in songs like Vieraaseen multaan, Hyiseen veteen and Varjojen saattue. The doomy style of the compositions gives an impression of the predominant themes on the record: ice and death. The brutal and marching sound wall creeps into the listener's ear and leaves a feeling of being wrapped in emotion and being distant from reality. Aggression, rage and sorrow are combined in the sound of Finlands most promising newcomers in the doom scene. A glimpse of Swallow the Sun, Tenhi and pure, raw death metal can be found in Saattue’s music. This band is recommendable to those who appreciate the more intense experience of metal and especially for those who favour the Finnish language. An ode to loneliness and an intense story of the farewell of the beloved.
